Oscar Brekell

Certified Japanese Tea Instructor

Born in Sweden in 1985, Oscar Brekell developed an interest in Japanese tea during high school, something that grew into a passion that later led him to relocate to Japan.
He became a certified Japanese Tea Instructor in 2014, completed an internship at The Tea Research Center in Shizuoka. and has also been working for Japan Tea Export Council. In 2018 he set up his own business, and is now involved in tea education projects overseas and arranges tea events and seminars in Japan. He is the first non-Japanese to receive a certificate for making hand-made Sencha and in 2016 he was awarded the CHAllenge prize by the World Green Tea Association. Lately he also appears frequently on Japanese radio and television, and is getting increasingly known for encouraging the Japanese to rediscovering the joy of drinking green tea.

Souheki Mori

Co-owner Setsugekka East Village, Japanese Tea Ceremony Master

Souheki Mori was born and raised in Japan. She has studied the Japanese tea ceremony for over twenty years under the Japan Association of the Tea Ceremony and received a certification as Japanese Tea Ceremony Master in 2003. Mori holds the title of Jufuku- an. In 2011, she has established Tea-Whisk in New York City to introduce the beauty of the Japanese Tea Ceremony with Junya Mori. In 2012, she became a Contemporary Chanoyu Award Winner as a distinguished tea master. In April 2017, Mori opened a matcha teahouse named Setsugekka in East Village, New York. Setsugekka offers not only just a cup of matcha beverage but also a meditative moment for busy mind that only a tea master who has over 20 years training can offer.

Pedro Villalon

Co-Fouder O5 Rare Tea Bar

Pedro Villalon, originally from Mexico, is a tea-hunter known for traveling the world in search of micro-batch tea leaves that he would be proud to share with family and friends. While he was working as the brand manager for P&G in China, he fell madly in love with tea and ended up starting a tea company in Vancouver. In 2012 he opened O5 Rare Tea Bar in Vancouver where a wide range of Japanese green tea is served. For this talk, Pedro will share his knowledge of Japanese tea: its history, production methods, as well as the nutritional value that promotes overall wellness.

Melissa Salazar

Red’s Zen Tea Co. Founder & CEO

International Tea Masters Association Certified Tea Sommelier and master Melissa Salazar began her career with a Bachelors of Science degree in Exercise Nutrition and Wellness. As she became a teacher in this field, Melissa realized that her passion for tea became stronger, leading her to establish her own Tea company, Red’s Zen Tea Company. She wishes to educate Americans on benefits of “health”, “mindfulness” and “wellness” through tea. Melissa is currently teaching Tea Certification courses through the ITMA. Her overall mission in life is to contribute to the world of tea by educating and helping others expand on their passion for tea. With her deep knowledge about the historical background of Japanese tea and nutria value, she can discuss the beneficial aspect of mindfulness through Japanese tea from both physical and mental points of view.

Lauren Harris

International Tea Masters Association Certified Tea Sommelier

Lauren Harris is a certified Tea Sommelier (International Tea Masters Association: ITMA). She studied Urasenke— Japanese Tea Ceremony—and then continued to train and qualify in worldwide tea studies via ITMA. After qualifying, Lauren worked directly for Steven Smith, at Steven Smith Teamaker, where she led National Demo programs. She reflects tea's incredible nuances as an educator and a way of life. As a U.S. Citizen who's studied Japanese Tea Ceremony, she teaches Japanese Green Tea from a zen/mindfulness perspective.
